Hydrogen Research for Transportation: The USCAR Perspective

Southfield, Mich.– The United States Council for Automotive Research has published a whitepaper on the importance of continued research of hydrogen as a transportation ‘fuel.’

The report, available for download on the USCAR Web site, highlights the importance of hydrogen as a promising zero-emission fuel source when used to power the highly efficient fuel cell electric vehicles, of which today, Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Company, already have more than 70 fuel cell vehicles on the road in Department of Energy test fleets.

Combined, these hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV) have logged more than 800,000 miles with zero tailpipe emissions.

SFC Smart Fuel Cell secures Daimler order:Fuel cells to supply onboard power

SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, technology and market leader for mobile and off-grid power solutions based on fuel cells, has secured an order for the supply of more than 130 EFOY Pro fuel cell systems in 2009 from the Mercedes Benz Cologne/Leverkusen branch of Daimler AG.

Daimler AG will be using the EFOY Pro 1600 systems to provide an onboard power supply for professionally used vehicles. Most of the systems will be retrofitted to existing official Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans. Others will be fitted in new Sprinters.

“This order confirms SFC’s market leading position for onboard fuel cell power supply of special-purpose vehicles”, said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Smart Fuel Cell. “Especially for professional users there is great demand for reliable long-term energy supply far from the grid. In this field we see one of the core growth areas for our company”.

These special-purpose vehicles, fitted with fuel cells, are to be used by officials non-stop for eight or more hours as a mobile office, to access important data. Therefore the vehicles need to support a high level of equipment functionality. Until now, it has been extremely problematic to provide a reliable power source for the equipment in these special-purpose vehicles with no access to an electrical outlet. The vehicles are often far from the grid, the engine cannot be kept running to provide the power as it is too costly and bad for the environment, and generators are out of the question for hours of use, as the noise and exhaust fumes are a strain on the vehicle occupants. The onboard EFOY Pro fuel cell solves this problem in an eco-friendly manner: it charges the batteries automatically, silently and without producing any emissions. This means there is no need to recharge from the grid or at the depot and the vehicles can be used flexibly, with no need to make special trips to the depot to recharge the batteries.

This repeat order for SFC to equip special-purpose vehicles means that by the end of the year, almost 400 official vehicles will be on German roads using EFOY fuel cells. The cartridges for this application will be sold at the sales points run by a large distributor, ensuring that there is blanket coverage. In Europe, the EFOY cartridges are already available at more than 1,200 sales points.

The EFOY Pro 1600 is in SFC’s EFOY fuel cell range. SFC’s fuel cells are coming into increasing use for recreation, industry, mobility and defense, wherever there is a need for reliable, convenient and eco-friendly power supply independently of the grid. The company has already sold over 14,000 EFOY fuel cells to international industrials and consumers.

IntertechPira and the National Hydrogen Association announce the agenda for “Hydrogen Production & Storage 2009″

Over 100 leading industry executives expected to attend conference September 30-October 2, 2009 in Washington, DC

Portland, ME  — IntertechPira, in conjunction with the National Hydrogen Association, is proud to announce the agenda for its 15th international fuels conference Hydrogen Production & Storage 2009. The conference will take place from Wednesday, September 30, 2009 through Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Marriott Washington Hotel in Washington DC.

“This conference is an opportunity for developers, producers, and users to discuss the viability and commercial potential of near-term technologies for producing and storing hydrogen, both on a large and a small scale,” said Christine Groff, conference director for IntertechPira. “Hydrogen Production & Storage 2009 will address technical and commercial hurdles, the cost of implementing a new infrastructure, market and consumer acceptance issues, and the timetable of events necessary to transition to a Hydrogen Economy.”

“With today’s hydrogen storage technologies, we can drive cars more than 450 miles on one tank of hydrogen, make power at cell phone towers more reliable and help warehouses save money by switching to fuel cell forklifts,” added Jeffrey Serfass, president of the National Hydrogen Association. “And the next hydrogen storage advances will allow products to run longer with less weight and take up less space. This is an important event to showcase these successes and have a frank discussion on what’s needed to get hydrogen quickly and efficiently in and out of smaller containers that weigh less.”

Speakers and session leaders will provide a close look at the market, addressing economic and technical constraints and stimulants for each production or storage method. “Hydrogen Production & Storage 2009″ will feature presentations from: Aldrich Materials Science, Alloy Surfaces Company Inc, Bethlehem Hydrogen, CanadElectrochim, DOE/LANL, DOE/NETL, Florida International University, Germany Trade and Invest, Harbin Institute of Technology, H2Gen Innovations Inc., Hydrogen Discoveries Inc, Lehigh University, LOGANEnergy Corporation, Nissan Technical Center NA, Proton Energy Systems Inc., Savannah River National Laboratory, Starpoint Solar, The Linde Group, University of South Florida, WS Reformer GmbH and Vencon Management.

SHEC Energy Technology

SHEC Energy’s solar thermal technology can be applied to power generation in the range of 25KW to the GW range.

The Achilles heel of renewable energy is its intermittent production. This very much limits the opportunity for grid connect since electricity cannot be economically stored. SHEC’s high temperature storage technology allows the thermal energy of the sun to be stored so it can produce electricity when the sun is not shining. This enables SHEC’s technology to provide base-load power.

About SHEC Energy Corporation

SHEC Energy was formed in 1996 with the mandate of producing hydrogen renewably and cost competitively with fossil fuels. This technology has been adopted for solar thermal power generation. SHEC Energy’s hydrogen history has provided a technological lead for power generation since high efficiency; high temperature solar technology was developed for the process. SHEC Energy has developed advanced, highly efficient solar technologies and manufacturing technologies to achieve this goal.

Solar energy was the logical renewable source because it is abundant with about 6,000 times more energy bombarding the Earth than all of humanity’s energy requirements. It also has a lifespan of billions of years.

SHEC’s technology is not only applicable for power generation, but can also co-generate hot water, chilled water and desalinated water simultaneously with little additional cost. The technology can also be applied to thermal chemical processes such as alternative fuel production.
