Oorja Names Fuel Cell Pioneer Shoibal Banerjee Vice President of Technology and Innovation

FREMONT, CALIF.– Oorja, the world leader in liquid fuel cell technology, today announced the appointment of Dr. Shoibal Banerjee as Vice President of Technology and Innovation. Dr. Banerjee will lead the development of Oorja’s next generation Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) technology for multiple applications.

“Oorja already boasts the most advanced, cost competitive and highest power Direct Methanol Fuel Cell in the world,” said Dr. Shoibal Banerjee, VP of Technology and Innovation of Oorja. “Over the next 12-18 months, we anticipate further cost reductions in the range of 35-40 percent, making the Oorja Direct Methanol Fuel Cell highly competitive in the multibillion dollar diesel generator market for applications such as powering telecom towers and rural electrification.”

Dr. Banerjee spent the last 30 years pioneering fuel cell technology at DuPont. Dr. Banerjee’s 1990’s invention of the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePFTFE) reinforced Nafion® membrane enabled the subsequent growth of the PEM fuel cell industry. Dr. Banerjee’s technical leadership, collaborative style and entrepreneurial skill emerged early in his career when a lack of internal funding led him to team up with automotive OEMs and other fuel cell developers writing proposals and gaining funding from the US Army and USDOE. This led to developing initial PEM Nafion® membrane technologies, forming the basis of a number Nafion® product lines for the PEM industry. He holds 17 Patents and has published more than 12 research papers.
