Fuel Cells Works, £1.5 Million Grant to Build Dorset's First Hydrogen Fuel Processing Plant

The government has approved a £1.5 million grant to build Dorset’s first hydrogen fuel processing plant.

A former landfill site at Canford Resource Park is being considered by Canford Renewable Energy for expansion.

To power the facility, the proposal includes the installation of an adjacent solar park.

Low Carbon Dorset’s grant would contribute to the project’s total cost of just under £6m.

According to the development proposal, the development would be permitted for 40 years on the green belt site.

This site, off Magna Road, in Poole, is composed of more than 11 hectares of land that was reclaimed from the old White’s Pitt landfill.

In an interview, the firm said the expanded plant would produce enough hydrogen annually to fuel 900,000 miles of truck travel.

This five-year project from the European Regional Development Fund is designed to help lower the carbon footprint of Dorset.

By ensuring the county’s low carbon economy grows and footprint is reduced, Dorset Council administers it.

As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), this is the first time the programme will make a single payment over £500,000.

Ministry of Communities, Housing and Local Government must establish a repayment plan for Dorset Council by August 2022, over nine months.

According to LDRS, loan financing through Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership may also be available for the project.

Investing in the project should begin in October by Canford Renewable Energy.
