The Gen-ZE project will further strengthen Bramble Energy’s relationship with the construction sector as it develops, tests and trials a ruggedised, portable hydrogen fuel cell generator.

Bramble Energy has been awarded government funding from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of the £40 million Red Diesel Replacement competition which aims to support the development and demonstration of low carbon fuel and system alternatives to red diesel for the construction, and mining and quarrying sectors.

Within the Gen-ZE project Bramble Energy will develop, test and trial a ruggedised, portable hydrogen fuel cell generator demonstrating a zero-emission solution to replace diesel generators targeted for the construction sector. Bramble’s printed circuit board fuel cell (PCBFC™) technology offers cost advantages over conventional fuel cells, and the simplified, robust design using PCBs will be demonstrated to meet the construction sectors needs for zero-emission portable power generation.

Vidal Bharath, COO at Bramble Energy comments: “The years of heavily subsidised red diesel across our construction sites has now come to an end and net zero targets for the industry are firmly in place. Now is the time we must look to viable clean alternatives that can be scaled quickly and offered the same subsidisation afforded by fossil fuels.”

Throughout the project Bramble Energy will work with UK construction companies, who will input into the design requirements and act as first adopters to trial the fuel cell technology. The project will also look to develop a strategy for the supply of green hydrogen and refuelling solution for the GenZE fuel cell generator. The commercial case of supplying construction sites with green hydrogen will be assessed with input from a range of hydrogen and infrastructure suppliers to deliver a commercial roadmap to decarbonising construction sites.

Bharath continues: “Hydrogen fuel cells operate in a similar manner to current diesel solutions, making their adoption relatively simple. They require less servicing and allow operators to maintain productivity whilst protecting the health and safety of site workers. The implementation of clean energy technologies like hydrogen will have a positive impact on the construction industry moving forward.”
