London, UK — Carbon Clean, a leader in low-cost carbon capture technology announced today it has entered into an agreement with power-to-fuels developer Liquid Wind. Carbon Clean will develop, standardise, and supply carbon capture technology and expertise to support the production of carbon neutral marine fuel.
Carbon Clean’s technology will capture biogenic carbon dioxide emissions from a local industrial site. Within the Liquid Wind facility, the CO2 will then be combined with renewable hydrogen to form the carbon neutral liquid fuel, eMethanol. When used as marine fuel, eMethanol reduces carbon emissions by 94% compared to current fossil fuels. By accelerating access to liquid carbon neutral fuel the Liquid Wind consortium will enable carbon neutral shipping, thereby accelerating the sector’s emission reductions.
The initial project will be built in Örnsköldsvik, on the north east coast of Sweden. Once operational from early 2024, the fuel facility will upcycle 70,000 tonnes of CO2 into 50,000 tonnes of carbon neutral eMethanol a year. By replacing fossil fuels, the eMethanol will prevent 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
The partnership has ambitions for future sites. Liquid Wind is developing eMethanol facilities to meet the growing demand for liquid renewable fuel and is targeting 500 operational sites globally by 2050. Alongside Carbon Clean, the project has support from a consortium including Haldor Topsoe, Siemens Energy and Alfa Laval, amongst others. All parties share a common focus on cost-efficiency to ensure the production of commercially viable carbon neutral fuel.
Aniruddha Sharma, CEO of Carbon Clean, said: “Carbon neutral fuel is an incredibly compelling prospect, and it’s exciting to partner and have invested in another high-growth business in Liquid Wind to help further accelerate the reduction of total carbon emissions. We have been successfully deploying our carbon capture technology at industry sites. We are now demonstrating how carbon capture can be a source of value creation.”
Claes Fredriksson, CEO, Liquid Wind added: “Carbon Clean is a leader in carbon capture, committed to continuously reducing the cost of the process, which is essential as we work together to produce cost-competitive carbon neutral fuel. We are impressed by Carbon Clean’s approach and expertise and look forward to working closely with the team to reduce the levelized cost of eMethanol production.”
About Liquid Wind
Liquid Wind is a Circular Carbon Energy Company striving for a cooler world. From Gothenburg, Sweden, the emerging Company will develop, finance, build and manage replicable eMethanol facilities to accelerate the transition to carbon neutral transportation and industry.
Liquid Wind was founded in 2017 and is based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Each eMethanol facility will capture 70KT of CO2 and generate 45KT of fuel, enabling a significant CO2 reduction of 90KT, per year.
Liquid Wind is actively engaged in discussions with potential fuel buyers and is expecting to secure long-term sales agreements for the capacity of the first facility later this year.
Liquid Wind are in discussions with large-scale investors to secure financing for the facility, providing stable, long-term investment prospects.
EIT InnoEnergy is an investment body and part of the European Union. Through knowledge, financing and network of contacts, they support the commercialization of products and their introduction to international markets.
