China: World’s Largest Hydrogen Refueling Station Opens in Shanghai

Shanghai--The Shanghai Chemical Industry Park and SAIC Motors held the inauguration ceremony of the “the world’s largest” and most advanced hydrogen station in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park.

In January 2018, SAIC and its subsidiaries reached strategic cooperation with Shanghai Chemical Industry Park to jointly promote the demonstration operation and infrastructure construction of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the chemical industry zone.

The completion of the hydrogen refueling station in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park is an important achievement of the strategic cooperation between the two sides. It will further accelerate the commercialization of SAIC’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and promote Shanghai’s construction into a world-class fuel cell vehicle innovation center and industrial highland.

The completed Shanghai Chemical Industry Hydrogen Refueling Station will not only provide support for 20 SAIC hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that will be operated in the region, but also provide commercial services to all sectors of the society.

The Shanghai Chemical Industry Hydrogen Station covers an area of ​​about 8,000 square meters, and the hydrogen supply capacity is about 2 tons per day. It has 35MPa and 70MPa hydrogen refuelling. It is also worth mentioning that the hydrogen refueling station uses the hydrogen produced by the chemical industry as a source of hydrogen to realize the recycling of resources and will actively contribute to the development of circular economy in Shanghai.

 China’s fuel cell vehicle “technical responsibility” 

The real realization of “zero emission” hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is the “ultimate goal” of new energy vehicles, and is also a strategic project focused on the layout of major auto companies around the world. To put it simply, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle uses hydrogen as a fuel instead of oil, and a fuel cell instead of an engine. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen in a fuel cell to generate electricity, and the resulting emissions are pure water. Compared with traditional fuel powertrains, hydrogen fuel cells have the advantages of high energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and high safety.

As the earliest automobile company engaged in the research and development of hydrogen fuel cell technology in China, SAIC has been investing and actively researching since 2001.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology has already competed with international giants, and has obtained 350 patents related to fuel cells, and actively participated in the formulation of 15 National standard for fuel cells.

In June 2018, SAIC Group established Shanghai Jie Hydro Technology Co., Ltd. to integrate core resources such as technical personnel in the fuel cell field, accelerate the research and development of independent core technologies, and provide fuel cell related products and services for the entire industry.

The world’s first fuel cell MPV model – SAIC Chase G20 FC hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, adopted the latest development of SAIC’s third-generation fuel cell system, and the first application of 70MPa hydrogen bottle hydrogen supply system in China. The power of the stack is 115kW, the volumetric power density is 3.1kW/L, and the low temperature start of -30°C can be achieved. The performance index has reached the international first-class level.

At the ceremony, SAIC Chase’s G20 FC hydrogen fuel cell MPV, SAIC Chase FCV80 fuel cell wide body light passenger, Roewe 950 fuel cell car and Shenwo fuel cell bus were unveiled.

These products are the specific achievements of SAIC Group in the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Among them, SAIC Chase FCV80 fuel cell wide-body light passengers are providing green travel services for Shanghai Chemical Industry Park.

The earliest and only commercialized SAIC Chase FCV80 fuel cell wide-body light passenger in China adopts dual-power source with fuel cell system as the main and power battery as the supplement. The longest cruising range can reach 500 kilometers.

Shanghai Hydrogen Station 3

At present, FCV80 provides green travel services to customers in Shanghai, Foshan and Fushun. The fleet size is 400 units and the total mileage of vehicles has exceeded 1.5 million kilometers. Especially in Fushun, FCV80 successfully passed the test of the severe winter in winter, with an average mileage of more than 30,000 kilometers.

The Roewe 950 fuel cell sedan is the only fuel cell passenger car in China that has an announcement, sales and completion. It is equipped with a dual power source of “power battery + fuel cell”, which can realize pure electric, hybrid and braking energy recovery modes. At the same time, it has the external power supply slow charging function, realizing the diversification of energy in the true sense.

The Roewe 950 fuel cell car has a maximum driving range of 430 kilometers and can be started at an ambient temperature of minus 20 ° C. The commercial operation has exceeded 500,000 kilometers.

As the designated vehicle for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) demonstration operation project, the Shenwo fuel cell bus was commercialized on the Shanghai Jiading 114 bus line at the end of last year. It has been used for 170 days and the accumulated operating mileage has reached 120,000 kilometers.

The development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is an important way to adapt to the global automotive industry’s ecological transformation trend and realize the transformation of China’s automobile industry from large to strong.

It is also an important practice for Shanghai to implement the national innovation-driven development strategy. As a local leading enterprise in Shanghai, SAIC will continue to promote the independent research and development of the core technology of hydrogen fuel cells in the future, and accelerate the exploration of new energy utilization with partners, promote high-quality development with technological innovation, and accelerate the construction of a global science and technology innovation center for Shanghai.
