Fuel Cells Works, Cochin Shipyard Embarks on the Construction of India's First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vessel

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has initiated the fabrication of India’s first fully indigenous zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vessel, marking a significant milestone in the country’s maritime industry. CSL has partnered with KPIT Technologies and IRCLASS for this project, which is partially funded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

Mr. Madhu Nair, CMD of Cochin Shipyards Limited, stated, “This vessel is expected to propel India to a strong position on the global front as among the first movers in this niche and emerging technology.”

In November 2022, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to construct the nation’s first hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel for operation in Varanasi. The MoU also includes the development of electric hybrid vessels for Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

The project highlights India’s commitment to embracing sustainable and eco-friendly solutions in the maritime sector. As the country moves toward cleaner energy sources, the hydrogen fuel cell vessel will play a vital role in reducing emissions and promoting a greener future for India’s waterways.
