Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are an integral part of the EU's low-carbon mobility strategy, as they run on hydrogen and emit only water.

The European Commission has been supporting the development of this technology through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme (2014 – 2020).

Commissioner Moedas tested a prototype of an FCEV that is funded under the FCH JU project HyFIVE, using advanced technology to offer efficient, clean, and quiet mobility.

During the test-drive the Commissioner visited a state-of-the-art hydrogen refuelling station in Zaventem, financed through the FCH JU project SWARM.
