Fuel Cells Works, f-cell: Stuttgart at the Center of the International Hydrogen Industry
  • More than 1,000 participants at this year’s f-cell awards for research and innovation go to Prague and Osterholz-Scharmbeck

Stuttgart–For the 21st time, international representatives of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry met in Stuttgart. The motto of the event this year was “Energizing Hydrogen Business”. After last year’s hybrid event, the event participants met again this year in person. It has been shown that the demand in the industry for direct exchange is great and cannot be replaced by digital formats. The f-cell awards went to Charles University in Prague and FAUN Umwelttechnik from Osterholz-Scharmbeck.

The industry is growing, investments are increasing and the fields of application for hydrogen are increasing. At the f-cell in the Haus der Wirtschaft on September 14th and 15th, 2021, more than 1,000 experts from all over the world came together to exchange ideas about future technology. “Hydrogen and fuel cell technology are no longer niche topics,” says Klaus Dollhopf (Director Sales Europe) from Eberspächer Vairex. “With the acquisition of the US company Vairex, we as the Eberspächer Group want to play a key role in shaping the industry’s growth path towards CO2-neutral mobility. At f-cell we had an excellent opportunity to present ourselves to a broader specialist audience for the first time in the new set-up and to hold discussions on a high professional level. ” Matthias Jurytko, CEO and Managing Director at cellcentric, the 50:50 fuel cell joint venture between Daimler Truck AG and Volvo Group, says: “At f-cell, various technologies and areas of application from the industry come together in one place. We can all learn and benefit from each other through the discussions and cross-talks. ”

Peter Sauber, who initiated the specialist event in 2001, is also still convinced of hydrogen and fuel cell technology: “The industry has expanded rapidly in recent years, and development only knows one direction. It makes me proud that my team and I have established the f-cell as a successful international event. ”From 2022, Peter Sauber will retire as the organizer of the f-cell. From now on, the event will be organized and carried out by Messe Stuttgart.f-cell Award promotes innovations and recognizes outstanding developments

This year, too, the f-cell Awards ceremony took place on the first evening of the event. The prize honors innovations and products that shape and advance the hydrogen and fuel cell industry in the long term. The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague received the award in the “Research & Development” category.

The title of the submission is “Structural modification of Proton Exchange Membrane: Toward stable, low-iridium loading water electrolyzer”. The award in the “Products & Markets” category went to FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG from Osterholz-Scharmbeck with the project “BLUEPOWER – hydrogen fuel cell drive trains for climate-neutral goods and cargo transport”. The awards were presented by Dr. Ulrich Maurer, Head of the Energy Industry Department in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment. The Ministry and the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation have been supporting the f-cell Award for many years.

In the fast lane with hydrogen

At this year’s 24-hour hydrogen challenge in the run-up to the f-cell, the team “Continue with hydrogen” prevailed against the competition. The aim of the race is to cover as many kilometers as possible in your own hydrogen car within 24 hours. A total of 18 teams took part in the competition.

The next f-cell will take place from October 4th to 5th, 2022 at Messe Stuttgart. This is where the f-cell will find the space and the premises to meet the increased demand.
