Pure Energy Centre (PEC) today announced that the company has sold for the first time a Hydrogen Electrolyzer to a UK University.
The hydrogen system has been shipped to the university and will be installed to assist energy research on hydrogen technologies. Pure Energy Centre hydrogen clients have generally comprised of businesses, councils, and not for profit organisations. An increase in enquiries from universities, academic centres and research organisations has ensured that the Pure Energy Centre add to their product line.
Elizabeth Johnson MBE, Pure Energy Centre Business Development Manager said: ‘This new opportunity presents the PEC with a new stream of potential clients from the academic world. We work a lot with Universities and research centres on projects and it is very important for us to react to their requirements and work with them to provide products and services that they require.’
She added ‘As hydrogen becomes more and more main stream, many students will require access to knowledge in hydrogen hardware. Our hydrogen electrolyzer will be used to support researchers, students, and academics to develop new hydrogen systems of the future.’
Why the hydrogen electrolyzer was selected by the University?
The hydrogen electrolyzer will be used by research students to produce hydrogen for investigating hydrogen properties. Several projects are actively being pursued by the University including how to effectively store hydrogen in cylinders at low pressures, how to integrate the electrolyser with novel compressor systems amongst many others.
The PEC system was selected because the electrolyzer produces hydrogen at high pressure, 30 bars pressure outlet. As such it allows for researcher to directly store the hydrogen into a metal hydride hydrogen storage system. By doing so, there is no need for an expensive compressor, hence saving on capital expenditure, operation costs and maintenance.
What is good about this hydrogen electrolyzer?
The PEC hydrogen electrolyzer was also selected by the University because it is easily transportable, very simple to use, install and commission. It has remote control and monitoring features that allows accessing information and data from the electrolyzerfrom any localtion around the world.
The electrolyzer can also be connected to a wind turbine or a solar photovoltaic system, providing versatility of supply. The Pure Energy Centre has developed the small hydrogen electrolyzer in three different sizes. The smaller size generates 250 litres of hydrogen per hour and is perfect for small laboratory experiments.
The medium size electrolyzer produces 500 litres of hydrogen per hour, which is good for testing small fuel cells. The larger of the three electrolyzers generates 1000 litres of hydrogen per hour (or 1Nm3/h) and has been used for cooking, dispensing hydrogen fuel, fuel cell electricity generation and heating applications. All of these electrolyzers can fit easily in a standard 19″ Rack.
Ross Gazey, Technical Director at Pure Energy Centre said, ‘We have installed small hydrogen electrolyzer systems (few hundreds of Watt) right through to very large ones such as 400 kW systems. Technically, this installation was fairly easy and we are now working to continue developing long lasting relationship with our academic partners.’
The Pure Energy Centre is now developing several hydrogen systems in Asia, South America, Africa and in Europe. Discussions on hydrogen systems in Middle East are also taking place.
