Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek calls for the acceleration towards a “National Hydrogen Strategy” in order to achieve the climate goals and to take advantage of economic benefits.
“Germany must take the lead internationally in the use of hydrogen,” said Karliczek. “Therefore, it is also important to increase the pace of the National Hydrogen Strategy. She has to go through the cabinet before Christmas. ”
Thereafter, a quick implementation should occur. “The reason is simple: Hydrogen is a very central energy source of the future.” Karliczek said that the aim is to promote the potential of hydrogen in the area of mobility and industry. “A key point of the National Hydrogen Strategy must be that we use Green Hydrogen in, say, the chemical and steel industries,” she said. “Green hydrogen” – ie hydrogen, which is generated with the help of green electricity – is essential for achieving climate goals.
“With the help of green hydrogen we can turn the greenhouse gas CO2 into a valuable raw material for synthetic fuels or chemical raw materials,” said the research minister.
At the same time, there is a huge economic potential for Germany in it. “That’s why we should continue to expand our research,” demanded the CDU politician. “From the climate fund, my house receives 300 million euros more. But that has to continue in the near future, “said the minister.
“There is a fast-paced international race for who will be the leader in the use of hydrogen and the development of appropriate technologies.” The Japanese, the Canadians, the Australians: they all recognized the great economic potential, says Karliczek. “Germany wants to lead this race,” she said.
“Everything that has to do with the use of hydrogen, the next major generation of products to be made in Germany.” Green hydrogen in its present form is still four times as expensive as the classic energy sources. “We have to get there and we want to invest more in research, also with the aim of Making green hydrogen cheaper, “says Karliczek. “Germany must organize partnerships with countries that are particularly suitable for the production of green hydrogen.”
