Fuel Cells Works, Germany: Federal Minister for the Environment Visits Business Initiative “Hydrogen Round Table”

Wilhelmshaven — The Wilhelmshaven/Friesland/East Frisia region offers ideal conditions for the establishment of a European hydrogen hub. At the invitation of the business initiative “Hydrogen Round Table”, the Federal Minister for the Environment Svenja Schulze visited Wilhelmshaven. The Federal Minister for the Environment was impressed by the innovative projects and once again emphasised the relevance of hydrogen in order to achieve a climate-neutral economy by 2045 without the loss of prosperity and employment. According to Schulze, it is important to support industry now in the best possible way by supporting the development of the necessary technical infrastructure.

The Hydrogen Round Table was set up at the beginning of 2020 with the aim of exploring the region’s potential for a European hydrogen hub and networking existing projects. The participating companies include Onyx Power, AtlasInvest, EKB Storage, EWE AG, HES Hartel Tank Terminal B.V., Novega, Nord-West Oelleitung GmbH, OGE, Rhenus Logistics, Salzgitter AG, STORAG ETZEL GmbH, Uniper and Vynova Group.

The participating companies include Onyx Power, AtlasInvest, EKB Storage, EWE AG, HES Hartel Tank Terminal B.V., Novega, Nord-West Oelleitung GmbH, OGE, Rhenus Logistics, Salzgitter AG, STORAG ETZEL GmbH, Uniper and Vynova Group.

In close cooperation with the local administration and politicians, Wilhelmshaven is to be developed into an H2 hub in Europe for import, export, generation, storage and consumption in the coming years. The region offers excellent conditions for this. For example, Wilhelmshaven provides the only deep-water port in Germany that could handle hydrogen internationally.

As Onyx Power, we want to play an active role in this project. By 2045, we would like to convert the existing power plant in Wilhelmshaven to a sustainable and CO2-neutral fuel if possible. The electricity generated this way could supplement energy from wind and sun to produce green hydrogen “Made in Germany” and improve the utilisation of electrolysers.
