ZSW visit by Besuch SKaufmann

Delegation with Ronja Kemmer MdB and Dr. Stefan Kaufmann visits Ulm on September 2nd

Green hydrogen plays a key role in a climate-neutral economy, as it can be generated from water using renewable energies and converted into heat or chemical or electrical energy without the formation of carbon dioxide. Thus, hydrogen can not only make individual areas of our society climate-friendly but rather pave the way for countries and entire continents to become climate-neutral. The European Green Deal outlines how Europe will be the first continent to become climate-neutral by the use of hydrogen in industry and mobility by 2050 at the latest.

In order to achieve these goals at the European level, the federal government adopted the National Hydrogen Strategy in June of this year. With it, green hydrogen should become the central energy source of the future and help to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions. Dr. Stefan Kaufmann, Member of the Bundestag, is the innovation officer for “green hydrogen” at the Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek. The CDU MP from Stuttgart coordinates the future research and innovation activities on green hydrogen for the federal government and is particularly intended to ensure that the results are quickly put into practice.

The city of science in Ulm has an outstanding position far beyond Germany in the research and development of electrochemical energy technologies. More than 400 scientists at Ulm University, the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU), and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) deal with such questions. For more than 30 years, the ZSW has consistently dealt with hydrogen – from its generation by water electrolysis and its conversion into electrical energy using fuel cells to its use as a fuel for mobility. The focus of the work is on the implementation of scientific knowledge and technologies in products that are tested and commercialized with partners from industry in laboratory and field tests.

The high-ranking delegation of Dr. Stefan Kaufmann, the innovation officer “Green Hydrogen” in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and Ronja Kemmer, member of the German Bundestag for constituency 291 Ulm, was represented by the University of Ulm by Prof. Dr. Michael Weber, President of Ulm University and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Josef Kallo, head of the Institute for Energy Conversion and Storage. On the industrial side, Karl-Heinz Raguse, Federal Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises, District Association Ulm and Eduard Freiheit, MIT Federal Commission Environment and Energy, board member CDU North-Württemberg represented the delegation. On the part of ZSW, Dr. Ludwig Jörissen, come on. Head of the ZSW Electrochemical Energy Technologies division in Ulm, Dr. Markus Hölzle, ZSW board member and head of ZSW in Ulm (from October 01, 2020), and Dr. Frithjof Staiß, managing director of the ZSW, paid the visit.
