Hyundai Motor Company’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Nexo, has sold more than 10,000 units globally for the first time.

According to market research institute SNE Research, a total of 18,457 hydrogen-powered vehicles were sold worldwide between January and November of last year, an increase of 14.2% from the same period the previous year. Of those, the Nexo accounted for 10,700 units, surpassing the 10,000 mark for the first time since its introduction and giving it a global market share of 58.0%, up 3.5 percentage points from the previous year.

This was significantly higher than the second-place Toyota Mirai from Japan, which sold 3,238 units.

The Shanghai Datong’s EUNIQ7 and Honda’s Clarity each sold 204 and 209 units, respectively. Sales of the Nexo have been steadily increasing, rising from 727 units in 2018, its first year of introduction, to 4194 units in 2019, 5786 units in 2020, and 8502 units in 2021.

It is believed that the increase in sales is due to the favorable perception of hydrogen cars and the larger subsidies they receive compared to electric vehicles. SNE Research predicts that Hyundai and
