Economic Affairs Minister Peter Altmaier will chair a High-Level Conference on Hydrogen today within the framework of Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The conference is entitled “Hydrogen in the energy industry: time for an internal and global market”. The virtual conference will also be attended by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson.
Said Economic Affairs Minister Peter Altmaier: “Green hydrogen is a key energy source for the future, and we need it on the road to climate neutrality. We therefore need to take the decisions in the EU now so that we can have a European market with common rules. And we need to press ahead in Europe and with our international partners to make progress on the production of carbon-neutral hydrogen. I shall be doing my utmost to push the issue of hydrogen during Germany’s Council Presidency.”
The Economic Affairs Ministry published the National Hydrogen Strategy in June; the European Commission followed suit in July with a European Hydrogen Strategy. Hydrogen is regarded as a key priority for the realisation of the European energy transition, particularly in some industrial and transport sectors where it is difficult to cut emissions.
Following keynotes by Federal Minister Peter Altmaier, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, Dr Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, and Ann Mettler of Gates Ventures, an initiative of Bill Gates, experts from the policy and business communities will discuss how Europe can deploy more clean hydrogen, how the necessary investment in hydrogen applications and infrastructure can be ensured, and how we can jointly put the legislation in place to establish a liquid and competitive market for hydrogen.
