Fuel Cells Works, Hydrogen: the Boss of Totalenergies Promises an Announcement That Will "Surprise" in the Coming Weeks

Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of the French energy giant, said that a “beautiful announcement” from the group on hydrogen was to be expected in the coming weeks.

TotalEnergies , soon to be a major player in hydrogen ? “We believe in hydrogen, of course”, assured this Tuesday morning Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of the energy group, on the set of BFM Business. The manager wanted to recall that the hydrogen market was “less mature” than that of renewable energies, but promised a “beautiful announcement” from the company on the subject and that this announcement “will surprise”.

“I can’t announce it yet because there is business secrecy, but it will come in the next few weeks and you will see that when TotalEnergies does something, it is not small,” said Patrick Pouyanne.

Acquisition of Clearway Energy

The French giant continues to diversify beyond gas and oil. The group announced last Wednesday that it had acquired 50% of the American renewable energy producer Clearway Energy Group, the fifth player in renewable energies across the Atlantic, from the Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) fund. The transaction amounts to 1.5 billion euros, and we must add 50% minus one share in SunPower, the American subsidiary of TotalEnergies specializing in residential solar power.

This investment “will allow us to position ourselves as an important and significant player in the American renewables market, which is the second largest market in the world”, said Patrick Pouyanné. “It’s one more step” and “it proves that appetite comes with eating: we said that we would accelerate the transition […], that’s the proof”, he continued.

The group will now hold a portfolio of 25 gigawatts of renewable energy in the United States thanks to the acquisition of Clearway Energy. The company has set itself the goal of having 100 gigawatts of renewable energy production capacity by 2030, but “in my opinion, it will be more than 100 [gigawatts]” by this horizon, assured Patrick Pouyanné.
