HYON AS has signed an agreement for delivering consulting services to TechnipFMC within the frame of the “Deep Purple” project.

The project aims to develop solutions that allow energy from offshore wind farms to be converted to hydrogen and stored on the seabed, enabling stable supply of renewable electricity to oil and gas platforms.

If implemented, the carbon emissions on the Norwegian continental shelf can be drastically reduced.

Marine Technology Director at HYON, Arild Eiken says: “Besides world-leading electrolysis, storage, and fuel cell technologies, HYON contributes with special competence within naval architecture and design of hydrogen process and power facilities for floating and fixed marine structures. In cooperation with TechnipFMC, HYON will perform engineering services related to technology qualification, development of offshore wind foundations, and subsea energy storage solutions.”

“The momentum in the broad range of new and ongoing hydrogen projects is strong. With the “Deep Purple” project, TechnipFMC shows itself as one of the thought leaders in the offshore wind sector; in addition to powering offshore oil and gas installations, the hydrogen produced can also be used for zero-emission power onboard ships”, says Tomas Tronstad, Managing Director of HYON.

With steadily falling prices for renewable energy, HYON’s hydrogen solutions are attractive for long term storage of energy with zero-emissions throughout the energy chain. Currently, hydrogen is mainly used as a raw material in the industry but is increasingly in focus as a medium for storing energy and as a fuel in the transport sector.
