Sales of hydrogen-powered vehicles exceeded the 5,000-unit threshold on the South Korean market in 2019. This was revealed recenlty by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
As part of its policy to promote the “hydrogen economy”, implemented a year ago, the government has invested some 370 billion won, nearly 290 million euros. And six additional measures were taken after the announcement of the roadmap to boost sales of these cars and develop related technologies.
Around the globe, Hyundai Motor is the leader with 60% market share and 3,666 units sold over the first ten months of last year, compared to 2,174 for Toyota and 286 for Honda. The cumulative number of hydrogen cars sold reached 1,700 units.
Last year, more than 5,000 vehicles of this kind were in circulation, a figure six times higher than in 2018. The Land of the Clear Morning currently has 34 hydrogen charging stations, 20 of which were built in 2019.
Seoul will continue to strengthen the infrastructure for cars powered by the fuel of the future, in order to create a viable ecosystem for a so-called hydrogen economy, led by the private sector.
