Puchheim— Bavarian technology combined with South Tyrolean innovation: The result is the second energy-independent and completely emission-free residential building, which the market leader for emission-free fuel cells – Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH – was involved in implementing.
Following the apartment building in the Swiss canton of Zurich, a sensational pilot project was officially inaugurated in mid-July 2019 in cooperation with specialists from “GKN Powder Metallurgy” (www.gkn.com) from Bruneck. At the 500 year old “Knappenhaus”, which is located in the northernmost mountain village of South Tyrol at about 1,500 meters, the first “Hy2green” storage system (www.hy2green.de) has been used for renewable energy. The residential property in the Ahrntaler place Kasern had at the start of construction over its own power supply. The goal was to build up a continuous self-sufficient supply of light, electricity and heat for the private home. Project management for energy production is based on the in-house water turbine. The Puchheim experts from Proton Motor, with more than 20 years of experience in the field of high-quality fuel cells, supplied the fuel cell module S8 as an involved partner. With a power capacity of 7.8 kilowatts in stationary use, this Proton engine module provides a part of the power supply to organize the requirement for the purely water-powered construction project.
The challenge of the mountain hut, which is referred to as the historic miners’ house, is the fact that the watercourse decreases significantly in the winter due to frost and icing. Therefore, a new storage technology was a prerequisite to land the natural “green” energy long term. The special feature of Hy2green solid storage is the local production and storage of hydrogen without additional compression in metal powder. The hydrogen serves as storage medium of the originally electrical energy. The metal powder in turn is used as a particularly secure storage medium for hydrogen, Hydrogen is generated from electrical energy by electrolysis and passed into the metal powder filled storage tank from GKN Powder Metallurgy. Here, the hydrogen binds to the metal particles – resulting in the so-called metal hydride, a stable and secure compound.
The connection of the metal hydride storage can be released again by simply adjusting the pressure and temperature. The hydrogen is directed into a fuel cell, which can be converted back into electricity. All that remains is oxygen and water, without any environmentally harmful influences. In addition, the integrated heat management absorbs the heat that declines as heat and additionally provides the heat cycle of the house . This significantly increases the energy efficiency of the building with its zero-emission power and thermal power plant, Stationary power generation through local natural energy sources such as hydropower leads to sustainable energy, CO2 reduction and perhaps cost savings, which one has to wait for in the project. In addition, the living and comfort quality is analyzed after some time of commissioning.
