• Motor prototype passes test runs with 100 percent hydrogen
• Pilot system for hydrogen block-type thermal power station in Hamburg-Othmarschen is to start operation as early as the 2020/21 heating season
• Conversion of a Jenbacher gas engine to a variable hydrogen-natural gas mixture up to 100 percent hydrogen

HAMBURG (Germany) – JENBACH (Austria)– INNIO and HanseWerk have just reached an important milestone in their joint project for a hydrogen cogeneration unit of the 1 MW class in the center of Hamburg: The prototype for the new type of engine, which is to be used in this pilot system has successfully passed all test runs on the INNIO development test bench in Jenbach.

Thomas Baade, Technical Director of HanseWerk Natur GmbH, adds: “This means that nothing stands in the way of the further implementation of our project. We will therefore convert the natural gas-powered combined heat and power plant in the UCI cinema center in Othmarschen to run on 100 percent hydrogen. Here we want to demonstrate how a combined heat and power plant can be operated in the future with green hydrogen – i.e. generated from excess wind energy – and thus generate climate-friendly electricity and heat. Together we are setting the course for a greener, safer, flexible and future-oriented energy future for Hamburg. ”

Highly innovative project on the way to the energy transition

The lighthouse project is being implemented against the background of the efforts of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein to make northern Germany the center of hydrogen technology in the state. The aim is not only to promote the future use of hydrogen technology in combined heat and power plants, but also to provide the city of Hamburg with the comprehensive provision of green hydrogen for customers in the electricity, heating and transport sectors. In addition, the addition of hydrogen to the natural gas network is to be simulated in the course of the project. The retrofitting of the existing block-type thermal power station should take place in autumn 2020. Similar to the block-type thermal power station in Hamburg-Othmarschen, other existing gas engine systems could also be converted to operate with a hydrogen-natural gas mixture or 100 percent hydrogen.
