The challenge is held annually each year at the end of December and the beginning of January, and vehicles that participate in it have to traverse thousands of kilometers of some of the most unforgiving terrain on Earth in hostile atmospheric conditions. Additionally, Dakar teams also have to follow the rules that govern the race, which increases the difficulty of it. These factors help to explain why the Dakar Rally serves as a proving ground for both drivers and technology, because only the best of both can hope to win.
