As one of the leading clean-tech providers in Europe, Proton Motor was selected to develop and deliver a 75 kVA container fuel cell system for the Surf ‘n’ Turf project on the Scottish Orkney Islands.

The Orkney Islands group situated to the north of Scotland avails itself of enormous natural resources of wind, tidal and wave energy.

For the first time ever, tidal energy is being used in the Surf ‘n’ Turf project to generate hydrogen via electrolysis. This is stored in the medium and long term, can be easily transported and, if necessary, can be converted into electricity by means of the PM fuel cell system.

In addition, energy thus generated can be used to heat buildings. In this way, an innovative holistic approach has been achieved, which supplies the entire region based on a hydrogen infrastructure supplying regenerative sustainable energy.
