  • The state wants to buy five hydrogen trains for the line to Otapeni Airport

According to report in the Romanian media, the Ministries of Environment and Transport are discussing the possibility of using European environmental funds for the purchase of five hydrogen trains to service the Gara de Nord-Otopeni Airport rail route.

Romanis could become the first country in Central and Eastern Europe that could have hydrogen trains for rail passenger service.

The trains could start operating on the North Railway Station-Otopeni Airport route scheduled for opening in 2020.

Coradia iLint is the first passenger train in the world that is driven by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce electrical power that is needed for traction. This zero emission train has very low noise levels and the only waste is steam and water.
