Climate-friendly hydrogen for Schwyz

ebs, Käppeli and IWB have submitted a planning application for a hydrogen production plant at the surfacing site in Seewen. By the end of 2024, the three companies want to produce CO2-neutral hydrogen with renewable electricity from the Wernisberg hydroelectric power plant. The two companies ebs Hydrogen AG and Käppeli Hydrogen AG were founded to implement the project.

A hydrogen production plant and a filling station are to be built on the premises of Käppeli AG, Seemattliweg 4 in Seewen. The investment costs amount to around 17 million Swiss francs. The central location and the proximity to the motorway connection and the pavement mixing plant are ideal for selling hydrogen for the mobility sector.

Hydrogen completes electromobility

As part of the move away from fossil fuels, hydrogen is increasingly coming into focus. Produced from renewable electricity, it is a clean and transportable form of energy storage. Up to 70 percent of the primary energy can be used with electrolysis. Additional use of waste heat, which is being tested, will improve efficiency by a further 10 percent. In heavy traffic in particular, hydrogen – as a supplement to battery-powered mobility – can contribute to a massive reduction in CO 2 emissions. Furthermore, the hydrogen can be added to the existing gas supply network of ebs Erdgas + Biogas AG with a share of up to 10%. Another goal is to use the hydrogen to produce a more climate-friendly surface.

ebs Energie AG holds 60% of ebs Hydrogen AG, A. Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz 25% and IWB 15%. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of ebs Hydrogen AG is Richard Föhn (Chairman of the Board of Directors of ebs Energie AG). Other members are Hans Bless (CEO ebs Energie AG), Jonas Bürgler (Member of the Executive Board ebs Energie AG), Lukas Käppeli (A. Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz), Reto Wehrli (A. Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz) and Arthur Janssen (IWB) . The purpose of ebs Hydrogen AG is the production and provision of renewable hydrogen from locally produced electricity.

Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz has a 65% stake in Käppeli Hydrogen AG and ebs Energie AG has a 35% stake. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Käppeli Hydrogen AG is Lukas Käppeli (A. Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz). Other members are Reto Wehrli (A. Käppeli’s Söhne AG Schwyz), Richard Föhn (Chairman of the Board of Directors of ebs Energie AG) and Hans Bless (CEO of ebs Energie AG). The purpose of Käppeli Hydrogen AG is the sale of renewable hydrogen, in particular through the construction and operation of hydrogen filling stations. The hydrogen filling station is primarily designed for heavy traffic (trucks).

Color theory of hydrogen

The chemical properties of hydrogen are always the same. However, there are different forms of production for hydrogen. These can be more or less ecological. It has therefore become established to assign hydrogen to a color depending on the manufacturing process. Green hydrogen is made from renewable electricity. Blue hydrogen is produced from fossil sources with storage of the CO 2 ; gray hydrogen is also produced from fossil sources, but without storing the CO 2 . ebs Hydrogen AG produces and sells only green, CO 2 -neutral hydrogen.
