Fuel Cells Works, Tender Open for Hydrogen Fuel Cell to Support Leading Maritime Propulsion Testing Rig.

A pioneering research and testing facility in Cornwall, designed to drive the replacement of fossil fuels with hydrogen in the marine and boating sector, has begun a competitive tender process to secure a new hydrogen fuel cell.

The Cornwall Marine Hydrogen Centre is a European funded project at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall in collaboration with Pure Energy Professionals, dedicated to testing the marinisation of hydrogen systems for small to medium vessels.

It is a world-first independent Centre for hydrogen components and systems aimed at leisure boats and small commercial vessels.

The project’s leaders are now tendering for the purchase of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell – that can provide between 20-50kW of power and which will play a central role on the demonstration system for the Centre’s test rig.

The fuel cell will drive an electric motor and perform tests designed to simulate typical marine trip schedule demands for small commercial and leisure vessels. The test rig and demonstration system will be completed later this year.

The project is open to collaborations with fuel cell providers with the prospect of independent review as to the suitability of their products for the marine market. The tendering process will end on February 10th 2022 at 12pm London Time.

Professor Richard Cochrane, from the University of Exeter said:  “The design of the hydrogen electric propulsion system is coming together well with lots of new suppliers providing components like the motors suitable for the marine environment. The fuel cell is a key component for the pioneering work that the Centre will conduct in the quest to drive green technology advancements in the marine and boating sector.”
