CMR Prototech is planning to install hydrogen fuel cells on the Osterøy car ferry “MF Ole Bull”. The ferry will be the first car ferry in Norway to use hydrogen as fuel.
“MF Ole Bull” is operating between Valestrand and Breistein just outside Bergen.The aim of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen and fuel cells for marine electric propulsion, and to test hybrid operation together with Li-ion batteries.
- One of the ferry’s two diesel engines will be replaced by an electric motor powered by 200 kW commercially available PEM fuel cells combined with 100 kWh batteries, says projcetmanager Tjalve Magnusson Svendsen in CMR Prototech.
The hydrogen consumption is estimated to about 150 kg per day. The CMR-connected companyGreenStat will supply the hydrogen that will be produced by electrolysis in the Breistein area. One of the main activities will be to obtain approval from the maritime authorities to operate the ferry with passengers, documenting that hydrogen operation can be designed to be just as safe as conventional diesel ferries. CMR GexCon will contribute to this work, using simulations tools and experience with hydrogen safety.
Experience obtained in the project will be used as basis for development of several hydrogen hybrid ferries as a zero emission solution for a range of marine vessels along the coast of Norway.
In spring 2010 CMR prototech tested a similar equipment on the smaller “MF Vågen”. The experience from this project can now be followed up by the new “MF Ole Bull” project.
