September 19, 2018, will be remembered as the day in which the first two commercial fuel cell electric vehicles (Toyota Mirai) were refueled in Spain, specifically at the facilities of the National Hydrogen Center located in Puertollano. The center is one of 5 hydrogen refueling infrastructures existing in Spain.
The fuel cell electric vehicles arrived at the National Hydrogen Center on the afternoon of September 18th, they were refueled in the early morning of the 19th, and later they were used in the Workshop entitled "Hydrogen as alternative fuel of the present and of the future "(also held at the National Hydrogen Center).
The Workshop had the participation of more than 55 professionals from the science - technology - company chain, who have had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the possibilities offered by hydrogen as an alternative fuel, the possibilities of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, the existing technology in fuel cell electric vehicles, private initiatives of renewable hydrogen generation plants in the region of Castilla-La Mancha and the hydrogen situation at national, European and global level. Additionally, it has been possible to see both the exposed vehicles and the hydrogen refueling infrastructure of the National Hydrogen Center.
Spain in general and Castilla-La Mancha in particular, due to the existing renewable potential, can make hydrogen a key element to allow a greater penetration of renewable energies by generating hydrogen with excess energy that can not be poured into the network and then use it as an alternative fuel, thus decarbonizing transport, which is one of the sectors that most urgently need to be decarbonized. Both the National Hydrogen Center and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha are aware of this opportunity, which has led to the signing of a collaboration agreement between both entities for hydrogen to play an important role in the economic transition in general and in the decarbonisation of the transport sector in particular.
