Fuel Cells Works, The State of Clean Fuel in 2022

The United Nations developed the Paris Agreement in 2016, creating global sustainability regulations. Nearly 190 countries solidified their support of the agreement with formal approval. The document follows a five-year plan, requesting that the participating countries submit nationally determined contributions (NDCs) after the initial integration period.

Many nations submitted their NDCs last year, vowing to use clean energy sources to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. This year, many countries will initiate their transitions away from fossil fuels towards renewables. Environmental scientists and engineers continue iterating on various clean fuel sources to support sustainability in 2022 and beyond.

Why Should We Use Clean Fuel Sources?

Various regions are adopting clean fuel sources to improve global ecological conditions. The Paris Agreement targets atmospheric degradation from the combustion of fossil fuels. Other environmentalists utilize eco-conscious energy sources to minimize surface pollution from pipeline leaks.

Fuel-related pollution also adversely impacts the entire ecosystem, depleting vital resources. Clean power sources minimize water displacement, preserve vegetation, and support agricultural production. By using ethanol, biodiesel, fuel cells, and renewable electricity, nations can successfully shrink their footprints and enhance sustainability.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a clean fuel alternative to conventional diesel. The product derives from biomass oils like soybean extractions. Other manufacturers use canola and corn oil to produce this sustainable energy source.

Environmentalists are also experimenting with using ecology-minded materials to generate biodiesel. Some professionals advocate collecting and repurposing old cooking grease and animal fat for power. Others convert algae into biodiesel because of its global abundance and quick regrowth process.

During combustion, biomass oils produce about 74% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, helping to improve atmospheric conditions. Because many forms of biodiesel derive from plants, they are also renewable sources, unlike fossil fuels. Many engines also accept these clean fuel sources, which should help create a seamless transition away from ecologically degrading energy supplies.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells are another form of clean power supporting sustainable energy demands in 2022. This fuel source is derived from hydrogen and releases water and heat as its byproducts. Fuel cells function like batteries, producing electricity and heat from an energy supply.

When hydrogen interacts with the anode, it influences the catalyst to release electrons. The free circuit generates electricity without greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing its sustainability. Environmental engineers are also utilizing hydrogen fuel cells, supporting storage technologies for renewable energy sources.

Renewable Electricity

Most countries obtain clean energy from renewable electricity sources like solar and wind power. In the first quarter of 2020, nearly 28% of the worldwide electricity supply came from renewables. Researchers expect countries to continue sourcing their power from emission-free supplies.

Nations like the United States are also using renewable energy sources to create clean electric grids. Unlike fossil-fuel-reliant grids, clean power technologies create a reliable and resilient electricity supply. They also increase society’s access to affordable, low-emission energy.

Solar is currently the most affordable electricity source on the market. Cost-effective clean power options support the transition away from fossil fuels. Once countries develop clean electric grids, they may begin accessing sustainability benefits.

The Benefits of Using Clean Energy

One of the most notable advantages of clean fuel is its positive effects on the environment. Minimizing greenhouse gas emissions conserves the composition of the atmosphere, reducing ecological changes and protecting natural resource supplies. Transitioning towards global clean fuel adoption also creates more sustainable jobs.

Since the pandemic, various countries are focusing on building back their economies. Expanding solar and wind farms and developing clean electric grids can improve job security. Another benefit of using clean power sources like renewables is they never run out, which means a reliable and abundant energy supply.
