Friday FallBack Story: HeiterBlick GmbH Develops Europe’s First Hydrogen Tram

By | News, Throwback Thursday | No Comments May 28, 2021 | < 1 min read May 28, 2021 | < 1 min read

HeiterBlick GmbH from Leipzig is developing a unique innovation together with the Chemnitz companies Hörmann Vehicle Engineering and Flexiva Automation & Robotik: Europe’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered tram.

The project was recently launched by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) with the approval of the funding surcharge. The project is funded by the BMVI with a total of 2.1 million euros as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP 2). The funding guidelines are coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

The prototype of the hydrogen fuel cell-powered tram will be presented over the next four years. The new type of drive enables urban tram operators to develop new routes – where, for ecological, urban planning or traffic-related reasons, overhead lines are difficult or impossible to implement. New city districts and outskirts can thus be developed much more easily.

  • The government sets requirements for hydrogen ferries on the Bodø-Moskenes section
  • Wants to facilitate emission-free solutions on the ferries along the Norwegian coast.

The ferry connection Bodø-Moskenes is Norway’s longest and runs over very demanding sea areas. Electric ferries will not work well enough on the stretch. Therefore, the government has decided that the next tender will presuppose the use of hydrogen technology, says Minister of Transport Knut Arild Hareide.
