To monitor the development of this technology, since 2023 Vedamotors has participated in Study Group 8 of Made in Brasil Integrado – MiBI, an initiative of the Federal Government that, through the Special Secretariat for Productivity and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy (Sepec/ME), established the Collaborative Network for Increasing Productivity and Competitiveness of the Brazilian Automotive Sector.

GE8 is dedicated to the “Hydrogen Chain with the objective of conducting studies to map new strategic chains for the mobility industry”, and reports directly to the Directorate of High and Medium Complexity of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC). To date, it has held workshops and a survey, in partnership with Sindipeças, on the “Perception of the Development of the Hydrogen Market in Brazil in the next 5 or 10 years”. The result of this work will be disclosed at the “Technological Exhibition and Symposium SAE Brasil”.

For Felipe Goulart, Operations Director at Vedamotors , the debates and exchanges on trends and technologies that can be applied to mobility and sustainable industry, held at GE8 of MiBI, have been very positive. “This movement helped us define goals and strategies to contribute to the transformation of the mobility sector and industry, incorporating technologies to participate actively in the Latin American green hydrogen market,” he says.

Components developed by the Athena Group for the use of green hydrogen:

Fuel cells – Hydrogen fuel cells (or fuel cells – FC ) are responsible for converting hydrogen, when combined with oxygen, into water and electricity. The applications are diverse:

– Mobility: Hydrogen will be converted into electrical energy and it will be supplied to the vehicle’s electric motor (electrified vehicles) or hydrogen will be injected directly into the cylinders of a combustion engine, instead of fossil fuel.

– Residential heating: FC can be applied in homes or businesses in countries with harsh winters to convert hydrogen into electrical energy and heat.

– Electricity production: Stored hydrogen can be applied in a FC to produce energy and make it available on the grid when, for example, the demand for electricity is greater than the production capacity.

Electrolyzers – These are devices capable of converting water into hydrogen and oxygen by applying an electric discharge. Like FCs, there are several electrolyzer technologies that follow the same principles as fuel cells, but in the opposite direction. The amount of electrical energy required to produce hydrogen by electrolysis is still high, but with the development of new technologies, it is expected that, in the medium term, the cost of hydrogen produced by this method, with the breakdown of the water molecule, will be competitive when compared to hydrogen produced from natural gas.
