Fuel Cells Works, AboitizPower and JERA Partner to Investigate Ammonia and Hydrogen Fuel in the Philippines

JERA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Aboitiz Power, a subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc., to conduct a joint study on the decarbonization of the energy sector in the Philippines through the use of ammonia and hydrogen fuel.

The MOU was signed in the presence of His Excellency Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines.

JERA, through JERA Asia Pte. Ltd., has invested in Aboitiz Power and aims to accelerate the decarbonization of energy in the Philippines. The study will examine the feasibility of using ammonia as a co-fuel in Aboitiz Power’s coal-fired power plants, as well as the development of a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain.

The companies will explore the possibility of incorporating ammonia co-firing into Aboitiz Power’s coal-fired power plants and evaluate target power plants for the implementation of the technology.
