inpex secures aud1 million grant for hydrogen study in darwin northern australia

INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) has revealed that its fully owned subsidiary, INPEX Operations Australia Pty Ltd, has jointly received a one million Australian dollar grant from the Australian Government. This grant will be used for a feasibility study examining the growth potential of a clean hydrogen market in Darwin, northern Australia. The study, known as the Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub, is a joint venture between INPEX, Santos, Xodus, and CSIRO, and it will probe into the possibilities of clean hydrogen solutions for both domestic and international hydrogen supply chains.

The Darwin Clean Hydrogen Hub study is set to be an 18-month program focusing on:

  • The market demand for hydrogen and its derivatives like methanol and ammonia, used as fuel in transport and power generation, and as feedstock for chemicals.
  • Identifying potential renewable energy sites and infrastructure suitable for water electrolysis to produce and deliver hydrogen and its derivatives to the market.
  • The production of hydrogen from natural gas and the requirements for carbon capture and storage capacity.
  • Bulk and distributed storage requirements.
  • Domestic and international hydrogen supply chains.

INPEX is aspiring to develop a hydrogen business, which is one of the five net-zero businesses outlined in the company’s INPEX Vision @2022 announced in February 2022. By around 2030, the company aims to commercialize three or more projects and aims to produce and supply 100,000 tons or more of hydrogen/ammonia per year.

About INPEX:

INPEX CORPORATION is Japan’s largest exploration and production (E&P) company, currently involved in projects across several continents, including the Ichthys LNG Project in Australia as the Operator. By making its oil and gas business cleaner while expanding its five net-zero business areas, INPEX aims to provide a stable supply of diverse and clean energy sources, including oil, natural gas, hydrogen, and renewables, thereby positioning itself as a pioneer in energy transformation.
