As part of the federal celebrations for German Unity Day, Alexandrinenstraße at Schwerin's Pfaffenteich will shine in a special light from 2 to 4 October from 7:30 p.m.: The Schwerin municipal utilities and GP JOULE will enable the evening illumination of 45 trees on the west bank of the lake using hydrogen - an impressive symbol of the energy transition. The lighting was officially switched on at dusk on 2 October.

In his welcoming speech, Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer emphasized the importance of green hydrogen for the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: "Green hydrogen is a key building block for future energy supplies and offers our state enormous opportunities. It not only strengthens climate protection, but also opens up new economic perspectives, especially in industry and transport. Projects such as the lighting of Alexandrinenstraße show that the expansion of sustainable energies in our region is becoming a reality." The symbolic lighting is based entirely on hydrogen. It is converted into electricity for the illumination in the H2Genset fuel cell from the manufacturer SFC Energy.

The art action is part of the ambitious project with the working title "H2 for SN". In May 2024, Stadtwerke Schwerin and GP JOULE had already decided to set up a regional hydrogen economy in the greater Schwerin area. Bernd Nottebaum, 1st Deputy Mayor of Schwerin , emphasizes the importance of the versatile energy source for the state capital: "Green hydrogen is now a significant location factor. It is not only a sustainable source of energy, but also makes our city more attractive for innovative companies that want to settle here. With this illumination, we are setting a visible sign for our green future."

Green Hydrogen for Freight Transport and Industry

A hydrogen production facility is to be built in the Göhrener Tannen industrial park, which can supply both heavy goods traffic and regional industrial customers. GP JOULE, as an integrated energy supplier in all areas of the energy value chain, sees enormous potential in hydrogen technology.

"Our joint project with Schwerin municipal utilities aims to make freight transport and regional industry more sustainable. Green hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energies, offers a wide range of opportunities for decarbonization. The region benefits not only from cleaner air and stable prices, but also from increased local added value," says André Steinau, Head of Business Relations at GP JOULE .

Commitment to the Citizens' Festival and to Schwerin

"With our involvement in the celebrations, we are showing that we are tackling the challenges of the energy transition in a concrete way. For us as a municipal company, the construction of an electrolyzer is a sensible extension of our existing production facilities. As a regional company, we are closely connected to Schwerin. It is therefore important to us to make a lasting contribution to an environmentally friendly community festival," explains Dr. Josef Wolf, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Schwerin . The company also supplies the community festival with green electricity from the Schwerin biogas plant.

With the hydrogen lighting of Alexandrinenstraße, Stadtwerke Schwerin and GP JOULE are sending a shining example of the importance of renewable energies and the future viability of the region.
