The Clean Hydrogen Partnership has announced a Call for Tender to establish and operate a ‘Hydrogen Valleys Facility’. This initiative, launched on June 25, 2024, with a budget of €12.5 million and a five-year timeline, is designed to foster the growth of hydrogen valleys in European nations, with potential expansion to third countries in line with European Commission priorities.

The facility aims to provide comprehensive project development assistance to support hydrogen valleys at varying stages of maturity. This includes activities related to retaining, analyzing, and disseminating skills and knowledge accrued from hydrogen valley projects, ensuring these insights are utilized effectively to drive further innovation and development.

The call to award a €12,5 million contract with a duration of a maximum of five years was opened on June 25, 2024. The deadline for receipt of tenders is set for September 27, 2024.

Moreover, the facility will play a crucial role in maintaining and updating the Mission Innovation Hydrogen Valley Platform, a global collaborative platform that consolidates information on large-scale hydrogen flagship projects. This effort is expected to improve the visibility and viability of hydrogen technologies, promoting low-carbon energy production methods and enhancing their commercial appeal globally.

The need for such a facility has been underscored by the European Commission’s increasing focus on hydrogen as a pivotal element of its energy strategy. Hydrogen valleys, which integrate hydrogen production, storage, transport, and usage within a defined geographic area, are seen as critical to achieving Europe’s green transition goals.

The tender process, set to conclude with the receipt of proposals by September 27, 2024, is anticipated to attract significant interest from parties keen to contribute to Europe’s hydrogen economy. This facility not only aims to support the technical and financial aspects of hydrogen projects but also seeks to facilitate the creation of a more robust policy framework that will enable the scaling up of hydrogen infrastructure across the continent.
