Canada’s Port of Argentia and the Hamburg Port Authority signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) Monday (March 18, 2024) in Hamburg forging closer ties on exports and imports of green hydrogen. Their joint goal is to bolster the green hydrogen supply chain and advance the transition to greener fuels. Scott Penney, CEO of the Port of Argentia in Newfoundland, commented: “This signing strategically aligns both the ports of Argentia and Hamburg to facilitate the development of a hydrogen export/import corridor as we collectively establish our ports as leaders in the global energy transition.” Initiatives in their respective port regions should allow the signatories to build a robust supply chain for Canadian hydrogen to Germany. Jens Meier, CEO of HPA, pointed out: “As future production and consumption locations, both ports have unique offers that could be shared in a mutually beneficial manner.” The LOI lends support to the mandate of the Canadian and German governments to establish an energy partnership, reduce emissions and thereby transition to cleaner fuels.
