Hydrogen fuel cells are a promising green power source, but they’re not perfect yet. Producing hydrogen is an energy-intensive, often fossil fuel-powered process and fuel cells’ secondary emissions go further, too. Fuel cell manufacturing must also eliminate its emissions for these technologies to be truly green.

Recently Cal State LA’s David Blekhman sat down with Simon Klein who is the EVP of Vehicle Engineering at Gaussin to talk about Gaussin’s first Dakar Rally truck (click here to view a video about the event).  The challenge is held annually each year at the end of December and the beginning of January, and vehicles that participate in it have to traverse thousands of kilometers of some of the most unforgiving terrain on Earth in hostile atmospheric conditions.  Additionally, Dakar teams also have to follow the rules that govern the race, which increases the difficulty of it.  These factors help to explain why the Dakar Rally serves as a proving ground for both drivers and technology, because only the best of both can hope to win.

Fuel cells could help power a clean energy future and cooperatives are working hard to make it happen. Over recent years, cooperatives have been instrumental in furthering adoption and support for clean energy sources. Fuel cells have a unique potential to fill a crucial gap in the clean energy movement, but many people are not aware of this yet. Cooperatives are positioned to expand fuel cell adoption in the years ahead.

Road trips are a summer staple, but rising fuel costs make it more expensive to pack up the family car and head across the country. Electric vehicles and those powered by hydrogen fuel cells are advertised as alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines. Still, they may not offer the range necessary to explore the highways and byways of the world.
