Italy Catania Transport Receiving PNRR 78 Million for EV and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Buses

The Italian Ministry of Transport has launched a significant tender for the supply of hydrogen fuel cell hybrid buses (FCHV), marking a major step forward in incorporating sustainable technology into Italy’s public transportation system. Titled “Fornitura di n. 10 autobus lunghezza 12 metri (+ max n. 60 opzionali), di tipo FCHV, inclusi ricambi a missione dichiarata per tutto il ciclo di vita,” the tender was issued on 30 May 2024 with submissions due by 1 July 2024.

This initiative aims to procure an initial fleet of 10 FCHV buses, each 12 meters in length, with the option to increase the order by up to 60 additional units. This move aligns with Italy’s environmental strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable urban mobility solutions across its cities.

Key Specifications of the Tender:

  • Bus Length: 12 meters
  • Technology: Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV)
  • Quantity: 10 units initially, with an option for up to 60 additional buses
  • Lifecycle Support: Includes comprehensive spare parts for the entire operational lifespan

Hydrogen fuel cell technology offers a compelling alternative to traditional diesel-powered buses by utilizing hydrogen to generate electricity, with water vapor as the only emission. This technology not only supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but also significantly diminishes urban air pollution.

Technical Requirements for Suppliers:

  • Fuel Cell Systems: Suppliers must ensure the fuel cell systems are highly efficient and reliable, supported by a robust supply chain for hydrogen fuel.
  • Durability: Buses should be designed to endure the rigorous conditions of urban transport throughout their operational life.
  • Spare Parts Provision: A thorough provision of spare parts is required to guarantee uninterrupted maintenance and operation.

The adoption of hydrogen-powered buses is a critical component of Italy’s efforts to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of its public transportation network.
