Passing of the German Hydrogen Acceleration Act Crucial for Decarbonizing the Transport and Logistics Sector

The recent passing of the Hydrogen Acceleration Act by the German government is a crucial step for transport and logistics companies looking to accelerate their decarbonization efforts.

With the amendment of the Fourth Ordinance to Implement the Federal Immission Control Act (BlmSchV), the requirements for the approval of electrolyzers are “simplified and unbureaucratic.” According to Dr. Cornelia Neumann, an expert in PEM electrolyzers at IMI, simplifying the approval procedures will help improve access for companies aiming to use small decentralized technologies for producing green hydrogen.

Since the German heavy-duty transport and logistics sector will play a key role in the adoption of hydrogen in the medium to long term, this recent development is good news for the industry looking to invest in hydrogen-powered vehicles.

“If the transport and logistics sector wants to reduce its emissions and achieve its decarbonization goals, immediate action is needed,” explains Dr. Cornelia Neumann. “However, building a large-scale national infrastructure for hydrogen storage and production will take years. The increasing availability of other solutions, including decentralized electrolyzers, will help bridge this gap and accelerate the widespread adoption of clean fuel technologies.

“The success of hydrogen as a greener fuel ultimately depends on its availability at the point of use. Therefore, the passing of the Hydrogen Acceleration Act is a welcome step in the right direction. Particularly in hard-to-electrify or rural areas, easier access to modular, scalable, and affordable hydrogen production will play a crucial role in ensuring the widespread adoption of clean hydrogen across the transport and logistics sector.”
