Dolphyn Hydrogen has announced a groundbreaking achievement in the UK’s hydrogen energy sector with the successful deployment and initial production of hydrogen from its test rig in Pembroke Dock, South Wales. This pivotal development marks the first instance of hydrogen being produced from seawater in a marine environment within the UK, setting a significant precedent for the future of sustainable energy.

UKs First Offshore Hydrogen Production Trial Successfully Underway in South Wales

The trial, conducted in Milford Haven’s Marine Energy Test Area (META), near Pembroke Port, is a key component of Dolphyn Hydrogen’s broader strategy to pioneer green hydrogen production. The company’s offshore Hydrogen Production Technology is undergoing rigorous sea trials through June and July 2024, aiming to validate the commercial viability of this innovative approach.

The test rig, housed in 20ft ISO containers for efficient transport and setup, is equipped with comprehensive systems for safe operation, including water treatment, storage, electrolysis, power generation, control systems, hydrogen metering, and vent systems. These components work together to intake seawater, purify it through desalination, and subsequently split it into hydrogen and oxygen via PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis.

A key aspect of the trials is assessing the rig’s performance under various conditions, such as variable power loads simulating wind turbine connections and different sea states. This data will inform the design and operation of future full-scale Dolphyn units planned for deployment across multiple locations in the coming years.

Safety is a primary focus, with the entire operation designed to adhere to stringent safety standards. The trial is powered by a generator using environmentally friendly hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel. In addition to testing operational efficiencies, the trials are collecting a wealth of environmental and physical data through advanced analytics and a digital twin technology, providing real-time performance insights.

Dolphyn Hydrogen is committed to contributing to the net-zero goals through large-scale production of green hydrogen, leveraging the potential of floating offshore wind power. This initiative not only highlights the technological capabilities of Dolphyn Hydrogen but also showcases the UK’s leadership in integrating renewable energy solutions for sustainable development.
