• The Senate-passed bill authorizes and appropriates $9.5 billion for clean hydrogen research, development and demonstration programs to be managed by the Secretary of Energy.
• The bulk of this funding—$8 billion—is authorized to the newly created Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for the development of four regional clean hydrogen hubs to be located in different geographic regions across the U.S. with the goal of demonstration projects and end-use diversity, which are likely to be led by companies. The biggest amount will go into carbon capture and developing hydrogen-based power systems.
• For the first time, U.S. law will define “clean hydrogen”—the current definition explicitly includes hydrogen produced from renewables, fossil fuels with carbon capture, utilization and sequestration technologies, nuclear, and other eligible sources.

WASHINGTON — The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA), the national association representing over sixty leading companies and organizations, today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Frank Wolak to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 3, 2021.  Mr. Wolak will be replacing the retiring Morry Markowitz after an outstanding ten-year term. Mr. Wolak was most recently Senior Vice President for Government Affairs and Market Development at FuelCell Energy, Inc., a long-standing FCHEA member, and previously served as FCHEA’s Board Chair.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) today announced it will begin offering Cat^® generator sets capable of operating on 100% hydrogen, including fully renewable green hydrogen, on a designed-to-order basis in late 2021. More immediately, the company will launch commercially available power generation solutions that can be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), the nation’s largest gas distribution utility, and Hyzon Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: HZYN), a leading global supplier of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles, announced today their plans to partner on a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric utility truck. The partnership supports SoCalGas’ NetZero 2045 climate commitment, which includes replacing its over-the-road fleet with electric and fuel cell electric vehicles, achieving a 100% zero emissions fleet by 2035.
