It has been approved to start up a green hydrogen plant in As Pontes. This will be the first plant of its kind in Galicia and will have a production capacity of 16,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
A new green hydrogen plant will be built in Spain. In the autonomous community of Galicia, the project has just been approved. President Alfonso Rueda announced the approval of “Galicia’s first strategic industrial project” on behalf of his government. The project is a joint venture between Reganosa and EDP Renováveis.
Puentes de Garca Rodrguez will start up the first green hydrogen plant in Galicia. Due to its status as a strategic project, a variety of facilities will be available for its implementation, which will increase investment and, most importantly, facilitate its completion. The project is expected to be completed by 2025.
The first green hydrogen plant in Galicia
As Rueda told the press, the plant will mobilize 156 million euros and create 100 jobs, 60 of which will be direct jobs. These facilities will also play an important role in reindustrializing the area. Galicia’s first green hydrogen plant will produce up to 16,000 tons of hydrogen per year.
Green hydrogen plants have a nominal capacity of 100 MW. According to the established plans, it will start operating in 2025. The plant will not be able to operate at full capacity until 2030, after which the project will be completed.
Parallel to the construction and commissioning of the green hydrogen plant, an energy storage system with an installed generation capacity of 570 MW will also be built in the area.
The storage system will consist of a pumped hydroelectric plant that will use the lake itself as a lower reservoir, and a new reservoir as an upper reservoir. In this way it will be possible to achieve a better management of the electrical system favoring a renewable maximization in the energy mix.
