Fuel Cells Works, BMW Releases Internationally Certified Hydrogen-Powered Bulletproof Safety Car
  • The BMW Group has more than 40 years of research and development of bulletproof safety cars, and is constantly pursuing innovation and breakthroughs.
  • Bulletproof safety features are perfectly integrated with sustainable travel, creating a new concept of hydrogen-powered bulletproof safety car
  • The BMW Group has always been committed to creating green and sustainable travel and advancing the goal of zero emissions

Recently, the BMW Group launched the world’s first internationally certified bulletproof safety car with a hydrogen fuel cell drive system, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car, further demonstrating BMW’s extensive application and advanced armor protection technology in the field of hydrogen fuel cells. . The BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car realizes the perfect combination of sustainable green travel and the needs of special protective safety vehicles.

Over 40 years of research and development of bullet-proof safety cars, continuously bringing Z extreme safety protection

The BMW Group has more than 40 years of experience in developing and manufacturing safety cars with different protection levels. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car is based on the BMW X5 Protection VR6 bulletproof safety car. This car is the best-selling luxury SAV bulletproof safety car in the world. It is a breakthrough that combines innovative electric drive technology and armor protection technology with the body proportions, passability and versatility of BMW X family models. With its integrated armor protection technology, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 car achieves the VR6 protection level, which meets the standards customized by the Association of Attack Protection Materials and Design Inspection Agencies (VPAM) .

The passenger cabin of the vehicle integrates body guards made of high-strength steel, and protective glass about 30 mm thick, and thicken and encrypt the gaps in the core areas such as the door, body, and luggage compartment. The vehicle can withstand the fire attack of most light weapons in the world, such as AK-47, and can prevent penetrating attacks such as HG85 grenade. The armored passenger cabin can withstand the lateral impact of up to 15 kilograms of TNT bombs within a range of 4 meters.

Bulletproof safety features are perfectly integrated with sustainable travel, creating a new concept of hydrogen-powered bulletproof safety car

The hydrogen fuel cell technology used in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car is combined with the fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive system. Among them, the driving system uses hydrogen as fuel, and drives the vehicle through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The vehicle does not emit any exhaust gas except water vapor. The motor is developed based on the fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive system technology used in the innovative BMW iX. The high-power battery located above the motor can be charged with the help of a highly efficient energy recovery system.

For this special drive system, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car uses the overall safety concept, combining the special bottom protection technology with the hydrogen fuel cell drive system to fully ensure the safety of the drive system. The bottom of the vehicle is specially designed to prevent the explosion of a grenade under the vehicle from damaging the lower part of the vehicle. The hydrogen tank and its valve system are sealed by a special protection device at the bottom. At the same time, the protection device has been lightweighted to allow the vehicle to have as much ground clearance as possible to ensure the vehicle’s good passability.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car was also subjected to an explosion impact test under the supervision of the Government Gun I Test Center. The deformation degree of the underbody protection device was measured and compared with the previous simulation results. Through computer scanning inspection, there are no cracks, delaminations, or hidden fractures in the vehicle hydrogen storage tank and bottom protection plate.

As the world’s first hydrogen-powered safety car, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 concept car fully proves that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can effectively combine with safety protection technology to ensure the safety of the members in the car. At the same time, it also perfectly interprets BMW’s technical advantages in the field of electric mobility. In terms of electrification, the BMW Group will launch a “new-generation” model series from 2025, setting new standards in digitalization and electrification, and elevating sustainable development to an unprecedented level. Hydrogen fuel cell technology may become BMW The new member of the group’s new energy product portfolio provides solutions for green travel for more customers around the world.
