Fuel Cells Works, Danish Shipping Introduces Its ‘Towards Zero’ New Strategy

With a goal of accelerating the global green transition of shipping by 2050, Danske Rederier (Danish Shipping) is now launching its new strategy for the next three years, entitled “Towards Zero”, with the aim to work even harder to overcome the regulatory financial and political barriers that stand in the way of global, climate-neutral shipping.

With the new strategy, Danske Rederier will, among other things, push for and create a basis for the reduction requirements and the following global climate regulation from the UN’s maritime organization, IMO, to become more ambitious.

In addition, the ambition is to strengthen the shipping companies’ climate reporting, make a tangible mark on the European climate package “Fit for 55″ and finally utilize the potential that Danish shipping companies have in offshore wind and CCTS.

“Denmark is a huge maritime nation and we therefore have an obligation to utilize our size to play a positive and ambitious role in the green transition of global shipping. Therefore, the purpose of the new strategy ‘Towards Zero’ is to accelerate the conversion of shipping towards becoming emission-free.

said Jacob Meldgaard, CEO of TORM and chairman of Danske Rederier.

The new strategy “Towards Zero” replaces the strategy “Ahead of the curve”, which Danske Rederier managed from 2018 to 2021. In the just concluded strategy period, one of the key benchmarks was to ensure that Denmark would continue to be an attractive place to operate a shipping company.

The Danish fleet has grown considerably in both flags and gross tonnage, and exports have increased. These are the most obvious proofs that Denmark is a good place to run a shipping company.

…said Jacob Meldgaard, CEO of TORM and chairman of Danske Rederier.

”We had a goal that the number of ships under the Danish flag should grow 10 percent, and that number has grown 14 percent. Measured by tonnage, the fleet has increased by more than 40%, so it has more than succeeded, ” he added.

The new strategy “Towards Zero” has the following 6 main goals

  1. Introducing new ambitious reduction targets towards 2050 in the final greenhouse gas strategy in 2023. The new targets should be based on science and be in line with the Paris Agreement.
  2. To increase Danish shipping companies’ contribution to the expansion of global offshore wind capacity and CCS projects
  3. To maintain and develop a strong supply chain of competencies for the shipping industry.
  4. To guarantee and deliver at least 400 internships at sea per year to take into account growth in the Danish fleet, including the offshore sector.
  5. To ensure competitive framework conditions and support continued growth of the Danish merchant fleet and shipping industry.
  6. To solve the daily challenges of our members.
