The UAE aims to capture 25% of the low carbon hydrogen market share by 2030.

Glasgow— The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, announced today the roadmap to achieve leadership in the field of hydrogen, a comprehensive national plan aimed at supporting low-carbon local industries, contributing to achieving climate neutrality and strengthening the country’s position as a source of hydrogen.

In the context of consolidating the directions of the wise leadership in the United Arab Emirates, to promote future solutions to global climate challenges, the most recent of which was the announcement of the UAE Strategic Initiative for Climate Neutrality 2050, which is the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region compatible with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The hydrogen leadership roadmap was announced during the Global Climate Change Summit “COP26” in Glasgow, which brings together countries around the world to commit to reducing emissions for the first time since the signing of the Paris Agreement.

His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said: The UAE today launched the UAE Roadmap for Hydrogen, which is a major driver that contributes to providing future solutions to global climate change challenges, coinciding with the country’s announcement of the strategic initiative for climate neutrality 2050.. The initiative aims to create an effective ecosystem that establishes a new model for a sustainable economic growth path that promotes research, development, innovation and clean technology. He explained that plans and strategies are being developed and the necessary initiatives and projects implemented by stakeholders in the main sectors in the UAE, including energy, economy, industry and infrastructure. Transport, waste, agriculture and the environment.

For his part, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy of the UAE for Climate Change, said: Through the vision and directives of the wise leadership, we are working to build capabilities in the clean hydrogen market, which has promising and great potential for growth…and through a roadmap to achieve leadership in In the field of hydrogen, the country will be able to implement ambitious growth projects in all aspects and areas of the clean hydrogen value chain, and benefit from the country’s leading position in advanced industries and technologies and low-carbon and zero-carbon energy.

We are confident that this map will contribute effectively to supporting the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality 2050, and promote sustainable economic growth.

For her part, Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “Clean hydrogen is a sustainable fuel for the future, and an important tool in the world’s efforts to reduce carbon, and that the roadmap seeks to benefit from the state’s investments and expertise in the field of renewable energy at acceptable prices to develop the hydrogen sector.” It will play a major role in advancing the UAE’s transformation into a sustainable low-carbon economy.

The roadmap to achieving leadership in the field of hydrogen includes three main objectives, which are to open new sources of value creation by exporting low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives and products to the main import areas, and to enhance opportunities for new hydrogen derivatives through low-carbon steel and sustainable kerosene, in addition to other priority industries. which contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The UAE seeks to support the low-carbon hydrogen industry through five main enablers, which are a clear regulatory framework supported by policies, incentives, standards and certificates, providing advanced technology through value-added partnerships and an effective national research and development structure in the UAE, in addition to strengthening existing government partnerships and establishing partnerships To accelerate the growth of the local system, provide infrastructure and land to support local production, and provide green financing sources.

The UAE is moving at a confident pace to achieve global leadership in the field of low carbon hydrogen, as it is currently implementing more than seven ambitious projects, through which it targets 25% of the share in the main export markets, including Japan, South Korea, Germany and India, in addition to targeting other markets. In Europe and East Asia, it is heading to lead the world in producing clean hydrogen with competitive advantages for blue and green hydrogen, including abundant and competitive hydrocarbons, building large-scale hydrogen and ammonia production facilities, and providing the world’s most competitive prices in solar PV and absorption capabilities. Large-scale carbon storage, which is already owned by the national oil company ADNOC, while ADNOC produces more than 300,000 tons per year of hydrogen, and the company plans to increase hydrogen production to 500,000 tons per year.
