Fuel Cells Works, ENERTRAG Chooses Elogen to Supply a 10 MW PEM Electrolyser

ENERTRAG signed a contract with Elogen, a company of the GTT Group, in December 2022 for the development and manufacture of a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyser with an output of 10 MW. Elogen will install its technology near Magdeburg (Germany) in 2024. The project is one of many green hydrogen projects that ENERTRAG is currently developing in northern and central Germany.

The Elogen electrolyser will produce up to four tons of green hydrogen per day, with the electrical energy required for the electrolysis coming exclusively from renewable sources.

The electrolyser will be operated in a system-friendly manner in order to compensate for the fluctuations in the wind and sun in the electricity system. The green hydrogen will be used to decarbonize heavy industry and transport, to generate electricity during a “dark doldrums[1]” and in the medium term to feed into ONTRAS’ 100% hydrogen pipelines.

Jean-Baptiste Choimet, Managing Director of Elogen, states: “We are particularly proud that Elogen’s membrane electrolysis technology has been selected for its performance by ENERTRAG, a leading European company for innovative solutions in the field of renewable energy . This is also an important step for Elogen, as this contract concerns an electrolyser with a capacity of 10 MW, which confirms the use of our technology in large-scale projects.”

Manuela Blaicher, Head of PtX Project Development at ENERTRAG, explains: “ENERTRAG is very proud that we have taken this step towards the realization of a 10 MW electrolysis plant at this great location in the middle of Germany with many offtake opportunities, both industrial and commercial in the mobility sector. With this reference plant, we will produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources on an industrial scale.”
