In its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and aiding in the maritime sector’s shift towards cleaner energy, PONANT is partnering with FARWIND Energy, a Nantes-based innovator, to explore groundbreaking hydrogen refueling options for ships. This collaboration is focused on developing renewable hydrogen solutions for PONANT’s fleet, aiming for carbon-neutral operations. The initiative will see both PONANT’s carbon neutrality ambitions and FARWIND’s renewable energy ventures progressing in tandem.

The partnership has outlined a strategy for enhancing renewable marine hydrogen’s production and utilization. This involves mutual efforts in managing onboard hydrogen, pioneering applications, and addressing technological challenges. Their shared objective is to simultaneously launch PONANT’s Swap2Zero project and FARWIND’s inaugural energy vessel by 2030.

Mathieu Petiteau, PONANT’s Director of Newbuilding and R&D, highlighted the significance of FARWIND Energy’s hydrogen production technology, noting its capacity to supply hydrogen in remote locations lacking infrastructure. This venture promises to merge a vessel with a local, renewable energy source, marking a pioneering step towards decarbonization. The Swap2Zero project is seen as a pivotal experiment to advance this innovative solution and establish new industry benchmarks.

FARWIND Energy’s groundbreaking energy ship, equipped with rotor sails, represents a stride towards renewable maritime energy production. Arnaud Poitou, Chairman of FARWIND Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with PONANT, emphasizing the potential of their technology to produce liquid hydrogen near operational zones, offering a viable strategy for maritime decarbonization.

FARWIND Energy is dedicated to creating advanced renewable energy supply solutions, optimizing proximity to consumption points. Its technology focuses on generating electricity from offshore wind and converting it into hydrogen through seawater electrolysis. This method supports both shore-based fueling and at-sea ship refueling, contributing significantly to the maritime industry’s energy transition.

PONANT’s Swap2Zero initiative represents a pioneering effort in the research and development of eco-friendly transoceanic vessels. Targeting near-complete carbon neutrality, the project investigates wind power utilization and the potential of low-temperature fuel cells powered by liquid hydrogen. Swap2Zero aims to serve as an innovation catalyst, offering scalable energy solutions for the broader maritime sector.

FARWIND Energy is at the forefront of harnessing far-offshore wind energy, offering comprehensive solutions for energy conversion, storage, and distribution. Its wind-powered ships convert wind into electricity, which is then stored as batteries, hydrogen, or e-fuel, facilitating efficient energy delivery tailored to consumer needs.
