FRV Launches 5 Billion Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production Project in at Pecem Port Ceara
  • FRV, under Jameel Energy, unveils a $5 billion initiative for a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility at Pecém Port in Ceará, aiming to supply European and Asian markets.
  • The project named H2 Cumbuco, will produce green ammonia using renewable resources, expecting to create significant employment opportunities and enhance local infrastructure.

Ceará, Brazil–In a pivotal development for renewable energy, FRV, a part of the Jameel Energy group, has announced the H2 Cumbuco project at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP). The project, with a staggering investment of 27 billion reais ($5 billion), aims to establish a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility targeting key markets in Europe and Asia.

Investment and Job Creation

The ambitious project is poised to generate approximately 1,500 jobs during its construction phase and over 200 jobs during operation. The construction is scheduled to start in 2027, with the facility expected to become operational between 2029 and 2030.

Phased Development and Enhanced Capacity

H2 Cumbuco will be developed in two phases. The first phase will see the installation of 500 MW of electrolyzers to produce 400,000 tons of ammonia annually. This phase involves an investment of 7 billion reais. The second phase will expand the installation to 1.5 GW of electrolyzers, ramping up the production capacity to 1.6 million tons of ammonia per year, with an additional investment of 20 billion reais.

Strategic Location and Sustainability Focus

Manuel Pavon, General Director of FRV South America, emphasized the strategic benefits of Pecém Port’s geographical location, which offers logistical advantages to both the US and European markets. The project commits to high European environmental standards and aims to incorporate sustainable practices, including the use of renewable energy and treated urban wastewater, promoting a circular economy.

Collaborative Efforts and Community Benefits

The project includes a partnership with Utilitas Pecém, a joint initiative between the Ceará Water and Sewer Company (Cagece) and PB Construções. This collaboration aims to provide sustainable infrastructure solutions, emphasizing the importance of water reuse to avoid impacting the human water supply, as highlighted by Cagece President Neuri Freitas.

Governor Elmano de Freitas lauded the project’s potential to transform the Port of Pecém into a hub of wealth and sustainable growth, benefiting both the local community and broader regional development.

A Growing Green Hub

FRV’s initiative is part of a larger movement within Ceará, which has seen pre-contracts and memoranda of understanding signed with numerous companies to bolster the state’s position as a leader in sustainable industrial development. This project not only represents a significant investment in green technology but also sets a precedent for future industrial projects in the region.
