  • Hyundai Motor Group to hold ‘AAM Tech Day 2022’ to revitalize aviation industry
  • Hyundai Motor Group has adopted the concept of AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) instead of Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

AAM is a term that adds Regional Air Mobility (RAM) to UAM. It is a concept under consideration by the United States and major European countries. If UAM focuses on the development of vertical take-off and landing aircraft that operate in urban areas, RAM means an eco-friendly aircraft development area for movement between major cities and regional bases.

On the 25th of May, Hyundai Motor Group held the ‘AAM Tech Day 2022’ event at ‘Hyundai Motor Studio Goyang’ in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, inviting about 100 people, including academics, major professors, and university students. introduced

At this event, Hyundai Motor Group first unveiled the R&D results of ‘Project N’, a hydrogen fuel cell and battery-based multicopter drone. Unlike the existing UAM gas, the Project N gas is characterized by using a hydrogen fuel system and a battery at the same time.

Hyundai Motor Group said, “We have demonstrated the possibility of developing a RAM aircraft using hydrogen energy by repeatedly conducting power tests and flight tests for the Project N aircraft.”

Project N passed airworthiness certification standards in February and was registered as the first hydrogen fuel cell aircraft in Korea. It is equipped with Hyundai Motor Group’s fuel cell system, has a diameter of 6 m, and has a maximum take-off weight of 700 kg. Airworthiness certification is a process by which government agencies verify whether an aircraft has a level of safety suitable for flight.

“Hyundai Motor Group is confident that it will be able to introduce an innovative and safe aircraft to the market compared to its competitors based on its experience in vehicle development, advanced automobile technology such as autonomous driving, and mass production know-how,” said Shin Jae-won, president of AAM headquarters.

This tech day started with a welcome speech by Shin Jae-won, president of AAM Headquarters, followed by presentations by Jae-yong Song, executive director of AAM business promotion, and Joseph Chang, vice president of RAM gas development office. composed of responses. In the afternoon program that followed, the development staff of Hyundai Motor Group’s AAM headquarters shared the current status and know-how of AAM-related technology development and talked with the attendees.

At the event, Hyundai Motor Group announced the background and purpose of advancing into RAM beyond the existing UAM business area, and introduced business and R&D synergy plans through collaboration with the American corporation Supernal. In addition, in the development working session, the current status of technology development in △AAM autonomous driving technology, △AAM electrification system, △aircraft concept, and △takeoff and landing device development was shared and a question and answer session was held with the participants.

Hyundai Motor Group established Supernal, an American aviation mobility corporation, in November of last year and started the aviation mobility business in earnest.
