Matteco, a Spanish company specializing in green hydrogen materials, officially announces its launch. Established in August 2023, Matteco emerges as a next-generation materials innovator committed to decarbonizing the economy and propelling the energy transition.

The launch coincides with the European Hydrogen Week, powered by Hydrogen Europe, bringing together industry leaders and marking a pivotal moment in the global energy landscape. Matteco’s inception reflects a timely response to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate change and the urgent need for sustainable energy alternatives.

Green hydrogen, recognized as a critical energy vector, plays a vital role in reducing carbon emissions from major industries and sectors that are challenging to electrify, such as steel and chemicals, and in long-distance transportation. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), green hydrogen could contribute to 20% of the total emission reductions required to achieve a net-zero scenario by 2050.

Matteco is the brainchild of a collaborative effort among scientists, entrepreneurs, and impact investors, united by a shared vision of creating innovative materials for a sustainable future. This groundbreaking project, emerging from Zubi Labs, the impact company builder of Zubi Group, aims to revolutionize green hydrogen production globally through nanotechnology.

Iker Marcaide, executive chairman of Zubi Group and co-founder of Matteco, steps into the role of CEO. He is joined by Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, a distinguished scientist from the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) at the University of Valencia.

The company’s first innovation, born from over a decade of research, is set to transform the production process and value chain of green hydrogen. Matteco introduces advanced catalysts and electrodes, crucial components in water electrolysis, providing a new performance standard for both alkaline (AWE) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis systems.

Matteco’s patented technology significantly alters the economics of green hydrogen production by reducing capital investment and operational costs. This breakthrough supports electrolyzer manufacturers and plant designers in achieving their hydrogen production cost (LCOH) targets, fostering the widespread adoption of green hydrogen.

About Matteco

The company is based in Valencia, Spain, was co-founded by Zubi Labs and a group of scientists in August 2023 after a decade of research, and is planned to open its GW-scale factory in Q2 2024.
