New Delhi– NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), the R&D wing of India’s largest integrated power utility, demonstrated successful hydrogen cooking with supply of hydrogen from the existing Green Hydrogen plant at its campus at Greater Noida.

The initiative highlights the unique burning characteristics of hydrogen, which differ significantly from traditional fuels like LPG or PNG. Notable differences include an almost invisible flame color, higher flame temperatures ranging between 1200-1500°C, and distinct flame propagation speed. Moreover, unlike LPG or PNG, hydrogen cannot be pre-mixed with air before ignition due to the risk of forming explosive mixtures.

NTPCs NETRA Successfully Demonstrates Hydrogen Cooking Using Green HydrogenAddressing these challenges, NETRA developed a specialized hydrogen burner, which was integrated into a modified cookstove for food preparation. This technology emphasizes the environmental benefits of hydrogen cooking, as the only emission from the hydrogen burner is water vapor, eliminating any carbonaceous elements.

The event was marked by the presence of notable figures including Shri Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, Shri Shaswattam, Executive Director of NETRA, and other senior officials. They reiterated the versatility of green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source, suitable for a wide range of applications while supporting environmental and sustainability efforts.

In addition to this cooking demonstration, NTPC has been actively pursuing various green hydrogen initiatives. These include a green hydrogen blending project with PNG (Piped Natural Gas) at Kawas, the upcoming commissioning of a green hydrogen mobility project in Leh, and the development of green hydrogen-based microgrids for remote locations in collaboration with the Indian Army.
